Carol’s Chronicles – July, 2021: Remembering a day at Surfside Beach

Beachgoers enjoying the sun and breeze on Galveston Island, Texas

Are you enjoying these long, summer days? Or is the heat and (maybe) humidity getting to you? I’m thinking about last year and all the changes that have taken place – and the great outing my husband and I had when we spent the day at Surfside Beach not far from Galveston.

The beach is one of my favorite places. I spent many summer days at the local sandy beach on the river that ran through our town, and those are days that stand out in my memory. So relaxing – no worries, just a kid in the sand! I learned to swim in the cold, spring fed water of that river, and built castles in the white sand on its beach with my dad, my mom, and my cousins from “the city” (I was just a small-town girl!) when they came over to spend the day or the weekend there in the state park. We would barbecue burgers, hot dogs, and sometimes chicken, and there would be potato salad, baked beans, and all manner of delicious snacks to munch on. Sometimes we would get a snowball from the pavilion – a truly special, cooling treat on a hot day. Bill and I still like to get snowballs when we visit our old home in Louisiana. The last time we were there in midsummer, we enjoyed these nectar flavor (SO good!) snowballs from one of the stands in my home town.

Bill and I love a good Louisiana snowball on a hot summer day. These are nectar – truly a fantastic flavor!

Wow, so many memories! It’s probably why I love the beach so much – I connect beach and sand and water with great, good times! I’m planning a beach trip soon again. This time, my granddaughter and I are heading for the Bolivar Peninsula, which is a bit north of Surfside Beach, on an island. I hear you can’t beat the shell collecting and sea glass hunting there – I’m a real fan of sea glass for my jewelry-making. While we’re talking about sea glass, I’d like to share with you a fabulous book I have in both paperback and in hardcover. I loved the paperback so much my husband gifted me with a hardcover copy of The Ultimate Guide to Sea Glass to keep on our coffee table! Take a look and please enjoy! You might just want to order one of your own. It’s available in paperback and Kindle formats, too, but I heartily recommend the hardcover because – it’s beautiful!

I hope you’re having a great summer and that you have the opportunity to get to the beach once in a while. It’s a great place to relax and unwind! What’s your favorite beach? Please tell us in the comments!
