September 5, 2020
It’s been busy around here at Oaks and Magnolias! September is one of those months that seems to revolve around birthdays. One of our grandchildren has hers near the end of August, as does my husband’s nephew. September is always a highlight, with our oldest granddaughter’s birthday near the end of the month, and Bill (my husband) has his birthday right around Labor Day. He says if he had a bit of luck as a kid, his birthday fell on the weekend before, or on Labor Day, so he didn’t have to go to school on his birthday. No school for him anymore, but it’s still nice to have his birthday around a special weekend most of the time. We decided to celebrate by doing something special (since long-distance trips are still out of the question), so we elected to go to a local breakfast/brunch cafe, Another Broken Egg. It’s not far from our home, so it was an easy ride in the car – maybe 20 minutes. Restaurants are open, with social distancing, but we felt better eating outside on their very pleasant patio. The wrought iron tables and chairs with big umbrellas for shade and the pleasant sound of water from the fountain are reminiscent of cafes in Europe and especially the courtyard restaurants in New Orleans’ French Quarter.
This place is one of our favorites for breakfast or brunch – they have a lot of choices that we really like. This month, though, I’m really into their seasonal specials (they change with the seasons), so I chose something totally decadent! It’s a French toast, pancake, Belgian waffle, and cinnamon roll French toast combo with two eggs and their housemade sausage patties. Wow. Just wow. Just this once, I decided to splurge and have one of their special Infused Bloody Marys, too. I didn’t finish all of this (not even close), and only about half of the drink, but it was a super meal. Bill had one of his regular choices, a BLT with avocado and spinach instead of the lettuce, on their multigrain toast. He enjoyed some of their excellent grits with his. And of course, we had coffee. I particularly like their featured blends so that was my choice this time.
I feel like this was a special weekend because it wasn’t only a birthday celebration for Bill, but it was special time for us, and we were out of the house! The ambiance made us feel like we were on a date, not just an old married couple having a meal out.
