It’s a brand-new year! I am excited and hopeful for our future and I hope you are, too. Lots of new things coming up here on Oaks and Magnolias – join me in exploring all the ways we can live our lives with joy in the best possible ways!
February 4, 2021
Even here in Texas, February brings us some pretty chilly weather! Our winter this year has had some pleasantly cool and some rather cold days and nights – many more than in recent years. I love it! It reminds me of the weather as it was when I was a girl, and in my teens, and even when our daughters were children. Maybe it’s a turn backwards in our climate, but I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts. What does cold weather make your think about?
I think about cold winds from the north/northwest, a few last falling leaves, and quiet. Winter, I think, is meant to be a quiet time. A time to think, ponder, reminisce, journal – and for me, also, it’s a time to regroup and plan ahead. It’s also a time to do things together. We don’t usually have snow here, but we get rain and wind, and often we want to be inside. Staying inside is fine, but it’s nice to have things we can do as a family – like cook!
For our family, one of the best ways to spend time together is to cook together or enjoy a meal together. Our granddaughter (who lives with us for a few months yet) really likes to cook and try new recipes. This is one she tried just a couple of nights ago – it’s called Thieves’ Stew, and it’s definitely a winner on multiple counts. One – it’s easy! Two – you can put it into a crockpot or slow cooker and leave it to cook – no work! Three – it’s delicious and great comfort food!
She found the recipe, but as usual, decided to adapt it quite a bit, and made it her own. She doesn’t mind me sharing, so I’m posting her recipe on a separate page for easy access. Here it is: Thieves’ Stew!
